Christine Lagarde does not rule out early exit from the European Central Bank

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has said it is still possible she could step down before the end of her term at the end of 2027 to become involved in French politics, but that running in France's next presidential election is "not currently" in her plans.

Responding to a question from French newspaper Les Échos about whether she would rule out the possibility of stepping down early, perhaps to participate in French politics, she said: "It is possible. I believe that a European voice needs to be heard in the French presidential debate."

Lagarde had previously played down rumors of resignation, saying a ship's captain would not abandon command in turbulent times, as inflation soared due to the rise in oil prices caused by the war in Iran.

She stated at the time that her initial position was to remain in office until the end of her term, at the end of October 2027.

Although she did not repeat this statement, she appeared to rule out the possibility of running in the French elections in 2027.

When asked whether she would support a candidate or run herself, she initially said, "I'll think about it," and then added, "I'm joking. I don't think that's on the agenda right now."

She said her main role would be to bring a European perspective to national politics.

"I would speak with a French and a European voice, because I am deeply both," Lagarde said of her possible role in the elections.

"I would tell them that France must play a decisive role in the economic future of our continent. And that without this European environment and this anchor, our economic prospects would be uncertain at best," she said.
