Chris Brown must pay R$67 million to employee for dog attack

Chris Brown, 37, was ordered to pay R$67 million in compensation to a former employee who was attacked by one of his dogs in 2020, in California.

Maria Avila had her face disfigured and has been living with the after-effects ever since. The sentence came out on Tuesday (30) after a trial that lasted two weeks and found that the singer acted negligently.

The attack happened when Brown's former employee was taking out the trash at the singer's house in Los Angeles. The dog weighed 90 kilos and left the woman with scars on her face and left arm and reduced mobility. She had to undergo a skin graft, removed from her abdomen and relocated to her arm, and since then has suffered from post-traumatic stress and has been unable to return to work.

In addition to the payment to Maria Avila, her sister and her husband will also be compensated, according to information from the American magazine Variety. Patricia Avila was also at the scene at the time of the attack and should receive R$4.6 million for moral damages when the attack occurred. Oscar Olivo will receive R$260,000.

The employee's lawyer celebrated the victory in the case. At trial, the singer claimed that the dog was part of his home's security scheme and that he had warned Maria and Patricia to only access the yard with security guards. The two, however, denied that they had this conversation with him. Brown's defense did not respond to the magazine's contact details.

In his statement, the singer said he was about to get into the shower when he heard noises outside. He said that when he arrived in the backyard, he found Maria covered in blood and was in shock.

Brown would have left his home in a hurry on the advice of his manager, claiming to avoid repercussions in the media, without calling the American emergency services.

Maria's daughter also testified at the trial and said that her mother no longer likes to leave the house so that people don't see her.

"She used to have a special glow, she always got ready, did makeup, did her hair, everything. Her personality changed. She no longer likes going out or being in public. She doesn't like photos and family outings," said Yoseline Espinozashe.

According to Variety, before the trial began, the judge prohibited questions about the singer's attack on Rihanna in 2009, when they were dating.
