GigaAi, a Chinese robotics startup with projects and tests in Hubei province, recently presented the SeeLight S1, described as the world's first general-purpose domestic humanoid robot. Unlike prototypes or controlled demos, the S1 is the first humanoid planned for deployment in real homes.

Humanoids - like Honda's ASIMO - have been circulating in domestic environments since the early 2000s, and their counterparts from Boston Dynamics, Figure AI and Tesla have been shown performing household tasks in videos. But the Chinese humanoid's proposal is more ambitious.

SeeLight S1 is possibly the first domestic humanoid to have a concrete and public plan for implementation in real homes, with a defined date, location and scale. Recently, a batch of 100 units began to be distributed for internal testing in corporate housing aimed at professionals in the technology sector in Wuhan.

In a next stage, scheduled for the first half of 2027, GigaAI should expand the project with the free distribution of units to families in the same city, prioritizing homes with the elderly, children or pets.

The idea is to test the robot in real and complex domestic environments, allowing data collection to improve its artificial intelligence and validate its commercial viability on a large scale. To ensure safety in these locations, built-in sensors lock the S1's movements immediately upon detecting contact with a child or pet.

With two functional arms and an articulated torso capable of manipulating objects, the SeeLight S1 is technically considered a hybrid humanoid, as it moves on wheels. But it is precisely this detail that will allow it to reach the market before its competitors.

In demonstration videos released by GigaAI on WeChat, the robot can be seen cutting vegetables, frying eggs, putting clothes in the washing machine, hanging them out, making the bed and opening curtains - all autonomously.

Although it cannot climb stairs like classic humanoids, the S1 is actually a strategy for mastering the next generation of artificial intelligence in the physical world, using real homes as a training ground. In practice, the apparent limitation is a choice that anticipates the market.

Unlike industrial robots, which operate with rigid algorithms and pre-programmed routines, the S1 uses embodied AI. More than software running on a server, this system is embedded in a physical body that interacts directly with the real world, learning and making decisions based on what it sees, touches and feels in the surrounding environment.

Currently, the biggest bottleneck in robotics is not in the hardware - motors, sensors and mechanical structures are already sufficiently advanced. AI, in turn, is also impressive: models have already been extensively trained on text, images and simulations. The missing link is data from the physical world.

For a robot to learn how to pick up a glass without dropping it, it's not enough to see millions of photos of glasses. He needs to learn in practice what it's like to hold a real glass - the resistance, the weight, the angle, the surface, what happens when the hand applies too much force.

This data only exists in the real world. While the training of large language models made use of content already available on the internet, data from the physical world can only be generated from direct interaction: the exact force to pick up an egg without breaking it, the readjustment of movement when an object slips.

That's why each robot deployed in a real home is worth more than a thousand laboratory simulations. Caring for the elderly, helping families with children and automating domestic work are not marketing promises: they are goals of the Beijing government, concerned about the demographic crisis and the rapid aging of the population.

In addition to testing, the SeeLight S1 already has a date to transform from prototype to product. In an interview with the Wuhan newspaper Changjiang Daily, GigaAI's CEO, Zhu Zheng, stated that the model will be available in stores in June 2027, at an estimated price of US$15,000 - a high price for the average consumer, but much lower than what competing humanoids are expected to cost.
