China suspends beef imports from another JBS unit

China has suspended beef imports from yet another Brazilian slaughterhouse for an indefinite period. The JBS plant located in Vilhena (RO) was embargoed due to the identification of progesterone in cargo exported by the unit to the Chinese market.

The statement was sent to Brazilian authorities in Beijing on May 26th by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC). The measure is sanitary in nature and follows the Chinese protocol for cases in which substances outside the standards required by the importing country are detected.

In April, China had already suspended other Brazilian meat export units after identifying the presence of a substance not authorized in the country in an exported batch.

At the time, residues of medroxyprogesterone acetate were detected in frozen boneless beef, a substance that is used as a veterinary medicine, but is not permitted by Chinese legislation for animals used in food production.

With this decision, the number of Brazilian slaughterhouses that are currently prevented from exporting beef to China increases to five.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries are monitoring the case and treating the measure as temporary and preventive, while the traceability of the batches and the investigation of the origin of the waste identified by the Chinese authorities takes place.
