Child is bitten by shark on Piedade Beach, in Pernambuco

An 11-year-old child was bitten by a shark this Sunday afternoon (31), at Praia de Piedade, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the state of Pernambuco. The animal, whose species has not yet been identified, caused injuries to the child's upper and lower limbs.

The CBMPE (Pernambuco Military Fire Department) was called to the accident in the early afternoon, at 1:26 pm, and three vehicles and eight soldiers were mobilized. The lifeguard team working on the beach at the time provided first care to the child.

According to CEMIT (State Shark Incident Monitoring Committee), the injuries suffered were on the thigh and left hand. After pre-hospital care, she was taken to the Aeronautics Hospital for specialized medical care.

CEMIT reported that this is the 83rd incident recorded in the state since 1992. Of these, 69 of the cases occurred in Greater Recife and 14 in Fernando de Noronha. Praia de Piedade has 24 such records, including the first incident documented by the Committee.

In a note, the CBMPE informed that there is signage indicating the risk of incidents involving animals in the area and advised the population to respect the recommendations of lifeguards and the warning signs visible along the coastal strip.

According to the Government of Pernambuco, permanent actions to prevent incidents with sharks are maintained, including monitoring, signage and environmental education, and in January 2025, 150 new signs were installed along areas subject to incidents on the coast of Pernambuco.
