Change in WhatsApp will allow 'anonymous' conversation with Meta's AI to avoid data sharing

Meta announced this Wednesday (13) the launch of an "anonymous" mode on WhatsApp for private conversations with its artificial intelligence chatbot. The measure seeks to reduce concerns about the privacy of sensitive information shared by users.
In a post on its blog, the company reported that the new anonymous conversation mode will allow temporary and private interactions with Meta AI, an artificial intelligence assistant available on WhatsApp for a few years.
According to Meta, messages will be processed in a "secure environment", to which not even the company itself will have access. Conversations will not be saved by default and will disappear when the session ends.
Generative AI systems face privacy-related questions because the large language models that underpin these tools are trained with enormous volumes of data, including, in some cases, personal information provided by users themselves in conversations with chatbots.

Other companies in the sector already offer similar features. The Google Gemini chatbot allows you to disable conversation history and prevent data from being used to train AI models. ChatGPT also has similar controls.
Meta said it decided to launch incognito mode because users frequently ask chatbots sensitive questions or share financial, personal, health or work-related data.
"We're starting to ask a lot of important questions about our lives to AI systems, and it doesn't always feel like you should need to share the information behind those questions with the companies that operate those systems," Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp at Meta, told reporters.
Cathcart further said that the mode anonymous will have security mechanisms to prevent responses on harmful topics.
According to him, the system will try to direct the user to useful information and, if necessary, will refuse to respond and may even stop the interaction completely.
Users will only be able to type questions and receive text answers. It will not be possible to send or generate images. You will also need to confirm your age, as Meta does not allow users under the age of 13 on its platforms.
