CCEE says it is ready to hold a battery auction this year
Despite the short time, the operationalization of the first auction of battery storage systems should take place without problems in 2026. In an interview with CNN's Alta Voltagem program, the director of market operations at CCEE (Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber), Gerusa Côrtes, said that the chamber has been preparing for months for the event, whose ordinance with the guidelines was published by the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) this week.
"The CCEE is ready. An auction does not start to be worked on one or two months in advance. Especially on the systems side, we started working many months in advance. Since the beginning of discussions about the possibility of a storage auction, we have started studies to understand what measures we will need to adopt", he stated.
The director highlighted that CCEE's role is to operate the auctions, transforming the guidelines defined by the government and regulatory bodies into procedures capable of making the auction viable.
"CCEE's responsibility is technical in operationalization, that is, translating the guidelines that come out in ministerial ordinances and notices to allow everything to happen in the best way possible", he said
The positioning comes after the government published the rules for the country's first energy storage auctions, scheduled for December, and Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) approved the rules for the use of these projects in the SIN Sistema Interligado Nacional.
The competitions must contract power from battery systems with 15-year contracts and supply will begin in 2028. Asked about the controversies surrounding the Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCap), held in March and the subject of questions at the TCU (Federal Audit Court), the MFP (Federal Public Ministry) and the Courts, Gerusa highlighted that CCEE's activities are restricted to the operational execution of the competitions.
According to her, there were no problems in the technical conduct of the auction. "For more than 20 years, we have held auctions in more than 100 events that represent investments in the order of trillions for the Brazilian electricity sector", he stated.
The executive added that the experience accumulated by the chamber over the last two decades provides security for the implementation of new contracting models, including the battery auction, considered one of the main instruments for increasing the flexibility of the electrical system in the face of the growth of renewable sources.
