Russia has accumulated around 1.4 million casualties since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, in February 2022, according to a study released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in the United States.
The number includes dead, injured and missing military personnel. Of this total, between 400,000 and 450,000 soldiers died in combat, according to the research.
The study points out that this is the largest volume of losses suffered by a great power in a conflict since the Second World War. According to the survey, Russian deaths in Ukraine exceed by more than nine times the total recorded by the Soviet Union and Russia itself in all wars fought since 1945.

According to the CSIS, Ukraine has also suffered significant losses since the start of the war, with estimates between 525 thousand and 625 thousand casualties, including dead, injured and missing.
In total, the two countries have already accumulated more than 2 million casualties in the conflict.
With this, the war could surpass the losses of the battle of Stalingrad, considered the bloodiest in history, with around 2 million victims in total - including military and civilians.
The Second World War (1939-1945) was the biggest conflict in history, dividing the world between the Allies (led by the USA, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and China) and the Axis (Germany, Italy and Japan). The conflict began on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. The USSR bore the greatest military effort and the highest number of casualties in the conflict - around 27 million deaths.
Russia loses more soldiers than it can recruit
The study also indicates that the wear and tear of troops has started to compromise the ability to replace troops. In 2026, Russia records between 30,000 and 34,000 casualties per month, while managing to recruit around 27,000 new soldiers in the same period.
Russian advance slows down
Although it maintains the initiative, the Russian offensive advances at an increasingly slower pace. On the main combat fronts, troops progress between 50 and 90 meters per day, a speed comparable to the slower offensives of the First World War.
According to researchers, the combination of trenches, minefields, anti-tank obstacles and the intense use of drones transformed large areas of the battlefront into highly lethal zones, making any rapid advance difficult.

Ukraine expands attacks and recovers areas
The survey also points to an important change in the balance of the conflict. Between April and May of this year, Russia lost more territory than it conquered, accumulating a negative balance of approximately 400 square kilometers, the first net territorial loss since August 2024.
At the same time, Ukraine expanded its campaign of attacks against refineries, fuel depots, weapons factories, military bases and logistics centers on Russian territory. According to the study, attacks have already affected cities such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg and have had impacts on the country's military and energy infrastructure.
