Capybara beaten in RJ is released into nature reserve after treatment

The capybara beaten by six men in March this year on Ilha do Governador, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, was released and returned to free life this Wednesday (20) after two months of treatment.

The animal lost sight in one eye due to the injuries and is now in an ecological reserve in Barra de Guaratiba, in the southwest zone of the capital. See images below:

On the date of the attacks, the capybara was rescued by the Environmental Patrol, from the Municipal Environment Secretariat, and then taken to Cras (Wild Animal Recovery Clinic) at Estácio Vargem Pequena.

According to doctors, the rodent arrived at the scene in serious condition, with head trauma, several puncture wounds on its body and a serious eye injury. The retinal injury left her blind on one side of her vision and, for this reason, she was taken to an ecological reserve.

The case
Civil police officers from the 37th DP (Ilha do Governador) arrested, on March 21, six people involved in the brutal attack on a capybara in the Guarabu region, on Ilha do Governador, in the north of Rio. In addition to the adults, two teenagers were also apprehended.

The crime happened around 1 am. According to witnesses, the group surrounded the animal and began attacking it with iron bars and pieces of wood, causing serious injuries. See images below:

The action was recorded by security cameras, and the images were essential for identifying those involved. The video shows the moment the capybara tries to escape, but ends up falling after being hit several times by the suspects.

After the attack, Civil Police teams began immediate investigations and managed to locate the group still in the region, in a flagrant situation.
