Canobbio reacts optimistically after Uruguay's draw: "Glass half full"
In their debut at the 2026 World Cup, Uruguay drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia this Monday (15), in Group H of the competition. Celeste went after the score and sought equality, which, for Canobbio, is a reason to see the glass as half full.
The Fluminense striker came on in the second half and helped give the Uruguayan team more intensity and danger. For him, it was important to leave the message that the team did not give up on the match.
"Life has to be like this, of seeing the glass half full. The debut, at the beginning of the teams analyzing each other, we conceded the goal, but in the second half we demonstrated intensity and quality. The image we want to convey is that of the second half, with the ability to turn the game around. It didn't happen, but the glass half full is what we left at the end", he told CazéTV.
In Group H, the result wasn't the only surprise of the day. Earlier, Spain, one of the favorites for the title, played out a goalless draw with Cape Verde, which is competing in its first World Cup.
Against the scenario of balanced matches and without broad dominance of the teams considered favorites, Canobbio reinforced the importance of the traditional Uruguayan delivery.
"Today I was talking to my father that the World Cup is very even, the level is high and there are no low-level teams, everything is very intense. We know that. In the history of Uruguay, we have never underestimated anyone. That is our characteristic and we will try until the end. It is a very even group, just like the entire World Cup is," he said.
With the quadruple draw in Group H, all teams have one point after the first round. Uruguay leads according to the tiebreaker criteria, as they did not receive yellow cards, while Saudi Arabia was cautioned once. Furthermore, Uruguayans and Saudis have an advantage over Spaniards and Cape Verdeans for having scored a goal.
In the next round, on Sunday (21), Uruguay will face Cape Verde. In the last round of the group stage, Celeste will face Spain, on June 26th.
