Canada and South Africa duel in search of their first World Cup knockout victory

Canada and South Africa face each other in the first game of the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup this Sunday (28), at 4 pm (Brasília time). Both teams advanced in second place in their respective groups.

The team that wins the victory will also be the first to qualify for the round of 16 of the tournament, scheduled to start on July 4th.

In Group B, Canada debuted with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, beat Qatar 6-0 in the second round and lost to Switzerland in the third and final match of the group stage, 2-1.

In Group A, South Africa lost in the opening game of the World Cup 2-0 to Mexico. In the second game, they drew 1-1 with Czechia and in the third game, they beat South Korea 1-0, guaranteeing an unprecedented qualification for the knockout stages of a World Cup.

The teams face each other in the unprecedented phase of the tournament, called the 16th round, which has 32 teams and precedes the round of 16.
