Caiado promises to reduce interest to 10% and expand reforms for agriculture and the economy
The former governor of Goiás and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Ronaldo Caiado (PSD), stated that he intends to prioritize the control of public spending, structural reforms and the reduction of interest rates if he is elected in 2026. The statements were made during an interview with Projeto Eloos, in Belo Horizonte.
According to Caiado, the current level of the basic interest rate makes investments in both the countryside and the city unfeasible. The governor attributed the scenario to the increase in public debt and defended a broad fiscal adjustment as a way to regain investor confidence.
"There is no sector in the world that can survive a real interest rate of 10%", he stated.
The pre-candidate said he intends to submit proposals for administrative reform, political reform, labor reform and changes to the social security system to the National Congress.
In his opinion, the combination of these measures would make it possible to reduce interest rates to a level close to 10%, keeping inflation within the target.
"I will make a commitment to cut spending, stimulate the country's development and bring the interest rate to levels compatible with those who produce", he declared.
Rural credit and debt
When commenting on the financial situation of rural producers, Caiado stated that the high cost of credit has worsened debt in the countryside and made new investments difficult.
According to him, there are still uncertainties about the sources of resources that will be used to finance support programs for the sector and to renegotiate producers' debts.
"Rural producers still don't know exactly where the resources will come from to meet their financing needs", he said.
For the governor, reducing interest rates is an essential condition for reestablishing the investment capacity of agribusiness and other segments of the economy.
Experience in Goiás
During the interview, Caiado cited his management at the head of the government of Goiás as an example of fiscal adjustment and balance of public accounts.
According to him, upon taking over the state, he encountered financial difficulties and implemented cost containment measures in conjunction with the other powers.
"The state of Goiás today has up-to-date commitments and investment capacity. This demonstrates that it is possible to make the necessary adjustments", he stated.

Presidential race
When asked about the electoral scenario, Caiado said he was optimistic about building his pre-candidacy and stated that he has expanded his presence in different regions of the country.
The governor highlighted the importance of Minas Gerais for the presidential race and stated that he has intensified agendas in the State.
"I have traveled throughout Brazil and structured our presence in the states. Minas Gerais plays a fundamental role in this process", he stated.
Regarding a possible composition with the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), Caiado said that it is still too early to discuss definitive alliances and that the definitions will depend on the progress of the campaign and the behavior of the electorate in the coming months.
Credibility as an asset
At the end of the interview, Caiado stated that the recovery of the Brazilian economy depends not only on technical measures, but also on society's trust in government officials.
"What sustains a government is the moral credibility of the leader and his ability to face problems", he declared.
According to the pre-candidate, the combination of fiscal responsibility, interest reduction and stimulation of private investment would be the way to increase wealth generation and the country's competitiveness.
