Brazil created 72,960 job vacancies in May this year, according to data from Caged (General Register of Employed and Unemployed) released this Tuesday (30) by the MTE (Ministry of Labor and Employment).

The result is the lowest balance of the year for a month, negatively surpassing the month of April this year, when the country created 79,526 jobs.

Compared to the same month in 2025, the drop is even more pronounced, since in May last year Caged recorded the creation of 153,108 job vacancies.

According to the MTE, the balance is the result of 2.2 million admissions and 2.1 million dismissals.

The balance is also the worst result for a month of May since 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, when Brazil recorded a loss of 398,230 jobs.

The result of job creation for the accumulated period from January to May is also the worst since the pandemic.

In the first five months of 2026, Brazil created 767,326 jobs, a result surpassed only by the first five months of 2020, when the country recorded the loss of 1.3 million jobs.

Despite this, the five major groups of economic activities recorded a positive balance.

The services group was the highlight, with a balance of 45,655 jobs, followed by construction, with 12,096 jobs created. The third group with the highest generation in the month was agriculture, with 10,205 jobs, followed by industry, with 4,974 jobs and finally commerce, with a marginal balance of 40 jobs.
