Cacau Brasil Agrofloresta receives US$ 31 million

The Cacau Brasil Agrofloresta project will involve investments of US$31 million over the next four years to promote agroforestry systems in the cocoa production chain in the states of Pará and Bahia. The resources include more than US$23 million from the Green Climate Fund and US$7.8 million from Ceplac (Executive Commission for the Cocoa Farming Plan).

The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, through Ceplac, the IICA (Inter-American Institute for Cooperation for Agriculture) and the Faepa/Senar System.

The project aims to support actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change through the adoption of agroforestry systems in cocoa production in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes.

Among the planned goals is the implementation of more than 12 thousand hectares of SAFs (Agroforestry Systems) in the project's areas of operation. According to Ceplac, the initiative is expected to contribute to carbon sequestration.

The project foresees the use of technologies aimed at sustainable cocoa production, focusing on the integration between agricultural cultivation and environmental conservation. The proposal includes the planting of cocoa trees in agroforestry systems, a model that combines cocoa cultivation with tree species and native vegetation.

The approval of Cacau Brasil Agrofloresta by IICA was announced during COP 30, and the execution of the project will begin after its official launch, which took place last week.
