The long-awaited biopic of singer Britney Spears, 44, has just taken another important step. Universal Pictures has hired screenwriter Liz Meriwether, creator of the "New Girl" series and four-time Emmy nominee, to write the feature's script.

Liz will be in charge of the first version of the text, which will be an adaptation of the memoir "The Woman in Me", released by Britney in 2023.

The autobiography, which was an editorial phenomenon, revealed unprecedented details about the star's career, her relationship with singer Justin Timberlake, the legal guardianship that controlled her life for more than a decade and the struggle to regain her autonomy.

The filmmaker heading the project, Jon M. Chu ("Wicked"), has been reinforcing that Britney will have an active participation in the development of the film.

"She will be very involved. We haven't started working on anything properly yet, but she will be very present throughout the process.

I have ideas, an approach and some plans, but we're still in a very, very preliminary phase," said the director in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

While details about the cast remain under lock and key, fans have already begun to speculate about who will play the eternal pop princess. Among the most mentioned names are Sabrina Carpenter, 27, who, like Britney, began her career at Disney before gaining ground in music, and actress Sydney Sweeney, 28, who rose to prominence in "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus".

When asked about the guesses, Jon replied: "I've seen all the choices made by fans and things like that. I always take that into consideration, because there could be a good idea there, but first we need to define what the angle of the film will be before we know who the right person is for the role. But I'm open to any possibility, honestly."
