Breastfeeding spaces: Abrasce will guide shopping malls only after STF ruling

Abrasce (Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers) stated this Wednesday (27) that it is following the decision of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) on the provision of suitable spaces for breastfeeding for employees of shopping centers and that it awaits publication of the ruling to guide shopping centers.

In a note to CNN Money, the entity reinforced the importance of initiatives "aimed at welcoming, well-being and protection of maternity".

"We also inform you that we await the publication of the ruling to fully analyze the details of the decision and guide associated enterprises on the next steps and the adaptation period foreseen by the STF", states Abrasce.

The STF (Supreme Federal Court) decided, unanimously, this Wednesday, that shopping centers may also be held responsible for the creation of spaces intended for breastfeeding and the reception of lactating employees who work in stores located in the projects.

The ministers understood that the obligation provided for in article 389 of the CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws) can be extended to shopping malls, based on the constitutional protection of motherhood, childhood and the women's job market.

The Court also set a deadline of up to one year for shopping centers to adapt to the new requirements.
