Brazilians win two medals in robotics competition in South Korea
Students from EduSesc, a network of Sesc schools in the Federal District, achieved an important feat at RoboCupJunior, the World Cup of educational robotics.
The Taguatinga team secured two medals in the OnStage category: 3rd place in the main competition and 1st in SuperTeams, a collaborative challenge between teams from different countries. The competition took place between the 2nd and 5th of July in the city of Incheon, South Korea.
The group, formed by students Juliane Souza, Caio Lima, 17, Matheus Santos and Sanches Cerneiro is the first from the Brazilian Center-West to participate in the tournament, which has existed since 1997. They were guided by professor William Caetano.
"All the time we dedicated to testing, rehearsals and developing the project was worth it. It's an achievement that represents our entire team, our teachers and EduSesc. I'm very proud to be part of this story", said Caio, who is in the 3rd year of high school at EduSesc Taguatinga Norte.
Technology, folklore and sustainability
The team competed in the OnStage category, a modality that evaluates presentations that combine robotics, programming, theater and creativity, in competition with 25 other teams from 21 regions of the world. In total, there were 97 competitors.
The Brazilians took 3rd place on the podium by putting together a robot and Curupira, a character from Brazilian folklore who is the guardian of fauna and flora.
Ambot is a prototype made with parts extracted from electronic waste and old discarded devices that can walk, lift objects and interact with human beings. It has computer vision, made from a repurposed webcam.
Students created theater to present work
The three put together a scenic and technological skit. In the short piece, Anbot acts as the robot assistant to a researcher named Kenai, with the mission of mapping the Amazon Rainforest.
During work, the duo is confronted by Curupira, who is suspicious of the technology's intentions. To convince the guardian of the AI's purpose, Anbot surveys data in real time and shows the guardian that the forest needs to be urgently conserved.
