Brazilians celebrate invitations to be part of the Academy that organizes the Oscars
Brazilians invited to be part of the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, celebrate the recognition that it represents to be able to vote for the nominees and help choose the winners of the biggest award in world cinema (see video above). Nine of them are on the list of 529 names released on Thursday (26).
"It was incredible news. I was very, very, very happy. I think it was a great moment for our cinema here, for us", celebrated Eduardo Serrano from Pernambuco, editor of the film "The Secret Agent", in an interview with Bom Dia Pernambuco, on TV Globo.

Other cinema professionals who participated in the Kleber Mendonça Filho's film, nominated for four categories at the 2026 Oscars, also received an invitation from the Academy: casting director Gabriel Domingues, costume designer Rita Azevedo, art director Thales Junqueira and editor Matheus Farias.
Brazilian guests also include Bernardo Uzeda, sound editor of "The Good Manners"; Wilssa Esser, director of photography for "Aurora"; Marcelo Caetano, director of "Baby"; and Adolpho Veloso, director of photography for "Dreams by Train".
"This invitation is part of a movement by the Academy, by the Oscars, to bring more plurality to new members. The Academy, for a long time, had mainly North Americans among its members - mostly white men. Now, there are a greater number of women and professionals from Latin America, Africa and Oceania. So, being part of this new moment for the Academy, which seeks this more diverse and renewed look, as a professional from Brazil, from the Northeast, from Recife, I think it has a very great weight and importance", said Matheus Farias.
Other Brazilian guests celebrated the invitation they received on Instagram. "Happy and honored with the invitation to be an Academy Member at the Oscars!", posted Thales Junqueira. "Very happy with the Academy's invitation to be part of this growing community of film people. Even happier to be alongside so many partner friends", celebrated Rita Azevedo.
Using a print of the news published in g1, Marcelo Caetano posted a message in English thanking and celebrating the invitation: "Thank you, Academy! New member in the area" (in free translation). He also celebrated the fact that he was invited along with Thales and Gabriel.
"All three at once. And it's no small feat. We started in cinema together, as assistants, apprentices, on the factory floor, without film school, without an artist's family. We formed our own, obsessed, manic, passionate about cinema", said Marcelo Caetano on Instagram.

The importance of these invitations to keep Brazilian cinema in the global showcase was emphasized by Eduardo Serrano and Matheus Farias, the duo responsible for editing "The Secret Agent", transforming 50 full days of filming into a 2 hour and 41 minute feature film.
"We will be able to vote on the nominees for the category of Editing and also for Best Film. So, it is through us that we can open doors for Brazilian cinema, especially in editing, in the Oscar nomination. For example, today, I think we only have three fiction editors in Brazil [at the Academy]. Now, we will have five, with me and Matheus. days
