Brazilian Under-17 Derby could serve as a test for semi-automatic offside technology

The classic between Corinthians and Palmeiras, valid for the seventh round of the Brazilian Under-17 Championship, could be part of the final phase of testing semi-automatic offside technology in Brazilian football. The initiative is part of a process led by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which intends to validate the system before its official use in Series A of the Brazilian Championship.
Last Thursday (26), the entity sent a letter to the clubs and state federations participating in the national elite requesting the use of stadiums capable of receiving the technology during the seventh and eighth rounds of the grassroots competition.

Corinthians has an appointment against Palmeiras on July 7th (Tuesday), at 3pm (Brasília time). Initially, the Derby is scheduled to take place at Fazendinha, however the location of the match may still change depending on the need to use a stadium equipped with the system.
The Neo Química Arena appears as one of the possibilities to host the confrontation. However, Corinthians' home has been undergoing lawn revitalization work since the beginning of June, which still raises doubts about its availability for the date of the classic.
If the duel is transferred to a stadium with the necessary structure, the system could be used as part of the CBF's operational tests. In addition to Neo Química Arena, other stages in São Paulo that have the technology installed are Allianz Parque, Morumbis, Vila Belmiro and Arena Barueri.
In the next round, Corinthians will face Vasco in the Brazilian Under-17 Championship. The CBF has not yet confirmed the date, time and location of the match, but Maracanã, São Januário and Nilton Santos also have the required infrastructure for the tests.
At this stage of the project, the entity's objective is to analyze the complete functioning of the semi-automatic offside in real game situations. Among the points evaluated are the stability of the internet connection, communication between equipment, positioning and calibration of cameras, in addition to operational performance throughout the match.
According to CBF Competitions Director, Júlio Avellar, the implementation of the technology requires a careful process before its official debut.
"The implementation of semi-automatic offside technology will be a qualitative leap for football in Brazil. Before putting it into operation in the Brazilian Championship Series A, the CBF chose to go through all the validation stages rigorously: installation, calibration and testing in real game conditions, precisely because we understand that a technology of this magnitude needs to reach the field with absolute safety and reliability."
The CBF's initial expectation was to use semi-automatic offside from the first round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship. However, the installation of the equipment and the necessary adjustments were not completed in time for the start of the competition, leading the entity to adopt a gradual implementation through selected matches.
The Neo Química Arena was one of the first Brazilian stadiums to receive all the necessary structure for the operation of the tool, which is already used in international competitions, such as the World Cup, tournaments organized by UEFA and also in the finals of the Campeonato Paulista.
