Brazil is eliminated from the World Cup by Norway and reaches the longest drought without titles

The Brazilian team said goodbye to the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16, this Sunday (5), after being eliminated with a 2-1 defeat to Norway, at the Metlife Stadium, in New Jersey. See the best moments:

Top scorer Haaland scored both goals of the match, in the 34th and 44th minutes of the second half. Neymar scored in stoppage time, taking a penalty. In the first stage, Brazil wasted a penalty, taken poorly by Bruno Guimarães and saved by Nyland, a Norwegian goalkeeper who had a great performance.

With the elimination, the Seleção will have the longest period without World Cup titles in its history: in 2030, it will be 28 years since it was five-times champion in 2002, the same period between 1930 and 1958, which had fewer editions.

This is also Brazil's worst campaign since 1990, when Brazil fell in the round of 16 to rival Argentina. And the team continues without beating Norway in its history, now with five matches, three defeats and two draws.

Bruno Guimarães misses a penalty in the first half
The initial stage was marked by Norway's control of the ball, which had more than 64% possession. The first clearest chance, in fact, came from the Norwegians.

Just two minutes into the game, Sorloth won on the right and crossed behind. Berg, free inside the area, hit well and beat Alisson, but the goal was disallowed due to Sorloth's offside at the origin of the play.

In the 9th minute, Rayan stole the ball in attack and Matheus Cunha was brought down inside the area. After a VAR call, North American referee Ismail Elfath reviewed the play and awarded the penalty.

In the charge, after some uncertainty between possible takers, Bruno Guimarães caught the ball, but hit it poorly, at half height, and facilitated the save by goalkeeper Nyland, who also made a great intervention after Vini Jr.'s attempt, in the 40th minute.

At the end of the first half, Norway started to scare us again. Haaland fought with Gabriel Magalhães, who made the tackle, but the ball was cleared by Odegaard. The Norwegian captain hit low, and Alisson made a great save.

Endrick enters and misses a clear chance in the 2nd half
With the return to the second half still tied up, Carlo Ancelotti once again called on young Endrick, who replaced Matheus Cunha after 12 minutes.

The 19-year-old striker had a great opportunity after just a minute on the field. Vini Jr. found a sweet pass for Endrick at speed, he led it and touched Nyland's exit, but the ball went out.

Haaland decides and sends Brazil home
The main player of the Norwegian team, Erling Haaland did not finish on goal until 34 minutes into the second half. When he succeeded, he scored the goals of the Nordics' historic classification.

In the first, he easily won the aerial ball from Bruno Guimarães, after Schjleuderup's cross from the left, and headed strong, with no chance for Alisson.

On the edge of stoppage time, when the Seleção was already feeling the nervousness of possible elimination, Haaland received the ball on the corner of the area and, with plenty of space, shot low and crossed, once again beating the Brazilian goalkeeper.

The Manchester City striker reached 7 goals in the World Cup and tied with Messi and Mbappé in top scorer.

In the 54th minute of the second half, the Brazilian team scored on a precise penalty kick from Neymar, after Casemiro was hit by an elbow from Ostigaard inside the area. But it was too late.

Norway awaits Mexico or England; Brazil says goodbye
With the end of the World Cup for the Brazilian team, the players now say goodbye to the United States and return to their respective clubs. Some will have time off, while others are already starting pre-season (in Europe) and inter-season (in Brazil).

Norway, in turn, remains alive in the World Cup and will now await the winner of Mexico x England, a match scheduled for 9pm (Brasília time), at the Azteca stadium, in Mexico City.

There is a possibility that the game could have a delayed start, as the storm protocol was activated around the stadium hours before the ball rolled.

The duel for the quarter-finals will be next Saturday (11), in Miami, at 6pm (Brasília time).
