Brazil can win two knockout stages in World Cups for the first time since 2014

The Brazilian team can once again win two consecutive knockout matches in a World Cup for the first time since 2014. To do so, they will need to defeat Norway this Sunday (5), in New Jersey, in the round of 16 of the World Cup.

The feat is only possible at this point in the competition because the Cup now has 48 teams. With the expansion of the tournament, an elimination phase was created prior to the round of 16: the 16th round. Brazil has already surpassed Japan at this stage, and is now trying to score its second consecutive knockout victory against the Norwegians.

The last time the Seleção won two qualifying matches in the same World Cup was in 2014, at the World Cup held in Brazil.

After advancing first in the group, the team eliminated Chile on penalties, in the round of 16. Then, they defeated Colombia 2-1 in the quarterfinals. The campaign ended in the semi-final, with the fateful 7-1 defeat to Germany.

In the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Brazil also topped its group, beat Mexico in the round of 16, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Belgium, 2-1.

In 2022, in Qatar, the script was repeated. The team advanced first in the group stage, defeated South Korea in the round of 16, but fell in the quarterfinals against Croatia, on penalties.

If they beat Norway, therefore, Brazil will once again add two consecutive victories in World Cup knockout matches - also getting closer to their sixth title.
