Brazil and Paraguay will have a meeting in July on the Paraguay River waterway

The Ministry of Ports and Airports stated this Monday (6) that its technical team will meet with that of Paraguay for a new meeting in order to move forward with negotiations on the auction of the Paraguay River waterway. As the canal covers the territory of both Bolivia and Bolivia, the three must agree to advance the project.

"Mutual interest in continuing with the concession process was reaffirmed and a new technical meeting was agreed to be held at the end of this month to advance the negotiations", stated the Ministry in the note sent to Broadcast (Grupo Estado's real-time news system and CNN Money's content partner).

A bilateral meeting was held last week, during the 68th Summit of Heads of State of Mercosur and Associated States, in Asunción, Paraguay.

After completing the technical negotiations and defining the necessary adjustments to the project, the government intends to move forward with the regulatory and administrative steps that precede the publication of the notice. This would be the first waterway auction held by Brazil.

According to the official schedule presented by the National Secretariat of Waterways and Navigation in May, the waterway concession notice should be published in the second half of 2026, while the auction was scheduled for the first half of 2027.

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Tomé Franca, stated at the end of June that the government intends to launch the notice between the second half of this year and the beginning of 2027, highlighting that the definition depends on the progress of negotiations with Paraguay and Bolivia

The initiative is treated by the government as one of the most relevant projects on the waterways agenda and could pave the way for new concession models aimed at managing inland navigation infrastructure in the country.
