Brazil and France sign agreement that ends visa requirements for Brazilians in French Guiana

The agreement that eliminates the visa requirement for Brazilians to enter French Guiana, a French territory that borders Amapá, was made official this Wednesday (1st). The measure was confirmed in a meeting at the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília, between Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and French Chancellor Jean-Noël Barrot.
The initial announcement was made in May 2025, in Paris, by French President Emmanuel Macron. The measure will come into effect from August 1st. The ceremony held in Brasília was also attended by the governor of Amapá Clécio Luís and senator Randolfe Rodrigues.

President of France removes visa requirement for Brazilians to enter Guyana
Amapá is the only Brazilian state that borders French Guiana, an overseas territory of France. Local authorities evaluate the end of visa requirements as positive for trade, tourism and cultural relations.
The measure that establishes the end of visas for Brazilians has been under debate for at least 16 years.
The request for visa exemption arose based on the principle of reciprocity, as French tourists do not need a visa to enter Brazil. Until then, Brazilians had to travel to the French embassy in Brasília to obtain the document.
"This is a historic milestone in our relations that meets the desires of the populations both on the Brazilian side, especially in the state of Amapá, and also on the side of French Guiana", said minister Mauro Vieira, upon signing the document.

The border between Amapá and French Guiana brings together around 32 thousand inhabitants. In Oiapoque alone, in the extreme north of the state, 26,600 people live.
On the other side, in Saint Georges, there are approximately 3 thousand residents. The two cities are separated by the Oiapoque River and connected by the Binational Bridge, built in cooperation between Brazil and France.

In addition to the visa agreement, Brazil and France signed other cooperation instruments aimed at security in the border region.
The documents provide for the strengthening of joint actions to combat drug trafficking, illegal mining, irregular immigration and criminal organizations operating on the border between Amapá and French Guiana.
