BP removes chairman Albert Manifold and cites governance issues

BP has removed chairman Albert Manifold with immediate effect, the company said on Tuesday, citing governance and conduct oversight issues, just months after the executive was appointed to help oversee a strategy overhaul.

BP, which launched a plan in February 2025 to shift its business focus back to fossil fuels and away from renewable energy, also named Meg O'Neill as its fifth chief executive in six years late last year.

In a statement on Tuesday (26), BP said the board had unanimously decided that Albert Manifold should no longer serve as chairman and director with immediate effect.

"This is due to serious concerns raised by the board regarding important standards of governance, oversight and conduct," BP highlighted.

"Albert helped bring a welcome focus and pace to BP's transformation. However, the board was surprised and disappointed to learn of governance oversight and conduct issues that it considers unacceptable and has taken decisive action," added senior independent director Amanda Blanc. Blanc oversaw Manifold's appointment in October.

A BP spokesperson declined to provide further details.
