Boy is hospitalized after eating cake; family talks about poisoning

An 11-year-old boy is admitted to the Ricardo Cruz State Hospital, in Rio de Janeiro, and the family suspects that a cake eaten by the child was contaminated with lead.

"The only thing we know he ate before he started feeling sick was this cake, right? So, the only thing he ate was this chocolate cake", said Mayara Mello, the boy's cousin.

The family member states that, initially, characteristics compatible with the presence of pellets in the child's body were identified. However, she points out that the official medical report has not yet been released.

Mayara also reported that her cousin remains stable and has shown a small improvement.

"He remains stable, there has been an improvement in brain swelling, there has been a decrease. It is still small, but we have faith and are praying a lot for it to decrease even more and for him to come out of the coma. He is intubated, so we continue to pray for this to happen, for him to improve", he highlighted.

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro reported that the investigation into the case is ongoing at the 64th DP (São João de Meriti).

According to the corporation, the unit conducts the hearing of witnesses and awaits the completion of the medical, toxicological and expert reports already requested.

The Civil Police highlighted that no line of investigation has been discarded and that any conclusion about the dynamics of the facts will depend on the analysis of all the elements gathered throughout the investigation.
