BMW X5 enters final testing phase, with hydrogen version for 2028

BMW confirmed, this Tuesday (16), that the new X5 has entered the final stretch of its development program. The fifth generation of the SUV is completing its final calibration runs on the outskirts of Spartanburg, in the United States, where the model is manufactured.

The big news of this generation is the offer of five different propulsion technologies. The first all-electric BMW iX5 will make its debut, followed in 2028 by the arrival of the first series-produced hydrogen-powered BMW, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Petrol and diesel versions with 48V MHEV technology will also be available, as well as plug-in hybrid models.

In terms of dynamics, the new X5 debuts the Heart of Joy, a control unit inherited from the Neue Klasse platform. According to BMW, the system operates ten times faster than previous ones and makes adjustments in milliseconds to the propulsion, brakes, steering and energy recovery.

The model comes standard with adaptive suspension - electronically controlled shock absorbers individually for each wheel and weight distribution close to 50:50. The wheels reach up to 23 inches.

For electric and plug-in hybrid models, there is the optional Adaptive Chassis Control Professional, which adds air suspension on both axles, active integral steering and active roll stabilization.

The system combines a third-generation fuel cell with a high-voltage battery and the new BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage - seven high-pressure carbon fiber tanks, connected in parallel and integrated into a metal structure.

The flat layout promises not to compromise the interior space of the cabin. Hydrogen models can be assembled on the same line as the others.

The electric iX5: Gen6 eDrive
The electric BMW iX5 debuts the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology, with a cylindrical cell battery and 800V architecture.

It is the largest battery ever installed in an electric BMW, with a net capacity of 144 kWh in the United States and 141 kWh in the European Union.

The traction is xDrive all-wheel drive, with a motor on each axle. Heart of Joy works with a focus on smooth stops and greater energy recovery in regenerative braking.

Launch dates and prices have not yet been announced by BMW.
