Apple changes strategy and anticipates security fixes in light of the advancement of AI

Apple started releasing security updates for iPhones and iPads before the release of new versions of its operating system. According to information from Reuters, the change is part of a strategy to respond to the advancement of cyber threats driven by artificial intelligence.

On Monday (29), the company made iOS 26.5.2 available for iPhones 11 and later models, in addition to equivalent updates for iPads. Under normal conditions, these fixes would be part of iOS 26.6, the next version scheduled for the iPhone system.
According to Apple informed Reuters, the change is a response to the advancement of artificial intelligence, which has reduced the time needed for criminals to develop tools capable of exploiting known flaws in software.
With this, the company intends to shorten the period between the identification of a vulnerability and the arrival of the fix on users' devices.
What changes with the new update policy?
Until now, Apple used to concentrate most of the security fixes on updates that took the system from one version to another. While the new iOS was undergoing testing with developers and other users, the fixes were awaiting the official release of this version.
With the new strategy, these updates could be released before the end of this process, without waiting for the arrival of iOS 26.6.
Apple stated that there is no evidence that the fixed vulnerabilities have been exploited by hackers.
Still, the company considers it necessary to reduce the time between the discovery of a flaw and the installation of the fix on devices in light of the new scenario created by artificial intelligence.
Which flaws were fixed?
As it usually does, Apple released few details about the fixed problems.
Regarding iOS 26.5.2, the company stated that, "for the protection of customers", it does not reveal, discuss or confirm security issues until investigations are completed and updates are available.
Even so, the update's technical documentation indicates the types of flaws fixed. The package brings together around 20 fixes related to WebKit, a technology used by the Safari browser to display internet pages, in addition to Mail applications and other system components.
According to the company, one of the vulnerabilities could allow a malicious website to access, without the user's knowledge, information copied to the device's clipboard.
Other failures could cause crashes, compromise the use of the device's memory or expose sensitive data.
