Anthropic suspends AI models after US restricts foreign access

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced this Friday (12) the global suspension of two of its most recent models, the Fable 5 and the Mythos 5, after receiving a determination from the United States government based on "national security" issues.

According to the company, the order prevents any foreign citizen from accessing the systems, regardless of whether they are inside or outside the USA. The restriction also applies to Anthropic's own foreign employees.
Given the scope of the measure, the company decided to immediately deactivate both models for all users.
In a statement, it stated that "the effect of this order is that we must immediately disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all of our users in order to ensure compliance" with the determination. The company's other systems remain available normally.

The decision is among the broadest measures ever adopted by the American government to restrict access to advanced artificial intelligence tools.
It was announced just a few days after the public launch of Fable 5 and about ten days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that creates mechanisms to assess possible risks to national security before the release of new AI systems.

Anthropic questions the American government's justification
Although it complied with the determination, Anthropic questioned the way the process was conducted. According to the company, the directive was received on Friday afternoon and did not present detailed information about what the risks identified by the authorities would be.
The company stated that it believes that the government's concern is related to a possible way to bypass some of Fable 5's security barriers.
After analyzing the demonstration presented by the authorities, the company concluded that the technique highlighted only allowed a limited number of known flaws to be identified and that similar capabilities can be found in other systems available on the market.
Anthropic also reported that put Fable 5 through a series of tests before release, in partnership with government bodies, independent organizations and internal teams. According to the company, the results indicated that the protections adopted in the model are more effective than those used in previous versions.
In the statement, the company stated that it disagreed with the withdrawal of a product widely available to the public based on a specific method of circumventing its protections.
"We believe that the government should have the ability to block unsafe deployments, as part of a legal process that is transparent, fair, clear and based on technical facts", he declared. "This action does not comply with these principles."
The company classified the episode as a "misunderstanding" and said it was working to restore access to the two models "as soon as possible."
To date, the American government has not released additional details about the concerns that motivated the restriction.
