Amid tension over Taiwan, China announces military exercises with Russia

The Chinese and Russian Navies will carry out joint exercises this month in the waters and airspace in eastern China, the Chinese Ministry of Defense reported this Sunday (5).

The military maneuvers will take place at a time of heightened tensions between the US and China for account of Taiwan - a separatist island that the Xi Jinping government wants to annex. Last week, the Chinese again asked Washington for "maximum caution" in relation to the territory.
Beijing did not specify the dates for the exercises, only that they will take place in the Yellow Sea and close to the city of Qingdao.

"After the exercises, part of the forces from both sides will proceed to relevant areas of the Pacific Ocean to carry out joint maritime patrols," the organization said in a statement.
The Chinese Ministry of Defense stated that the exercises military exercises are carried out annually and aim to "jointly face security challenges and maintain regional peace and stability".
China constantly monitors Taiwan with warships, something that sometimes heightens tensions in the region. Beijing justifies the surveillance as patrols to "guarantee Chinese territorial sovereignty."
