American breaks record for fastest ascent of Everest

American climber Tyler Andrews broke, this Thursday (28), the record for the fastest climb to Mount Everest using supplemental oxygen. He covered the route between the base camp, at an altitude of 5,364 meters, and the mountain's summit, at 8,848 meters, in less than ten hours.
According to David Stephen Sherpa, head of the company Asian Trekking, responsible for the expedition, Andrews reached the top of Everest in 9 hours and 55 minutes.
"He reached the summit in just 9 hours and 55 minutes", he told AFP.

The previous record officially recognized in this category belonged to the Nepalese climber Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, who completed the same route in 10 hours and 56 minutes, in 2003.
According to Asian Trekking, Tyler Andrews, aged 36, made the climb alone, with logistical support from two guides responsible for supplying oxygen, water and equipment along the route.
The feat takes place during a season considered historic on Everest. According to Nepal authorities, more than 950 climbers have reached the top of the mountain since the start of the spring climbing season on May 13, driven by favorable weather conditions.

The Guinness Book of Records points out that the highest number of ascents of Everest in a single season was, until then, 872, a mark recorded in 2019.
Other records were also surpassed this year, including the highest number of climbed in a single day - 275, on May 21 - and the total number of permits granted to foreigners by the Nepalese authorities, which reached 494.
Despite the intense movement, five climbers died this season on the slopes of Everest - two Indians and three Nepalese. In 2023, considered the deadliest year ever recorded on the mountain, 18 people lost their lives.
