Alphonso Davies is called up by Canada despite new injury
Bayern Munich winger Alphonso Davies was included in the list of 32 players called up for the Canadian national team's final training period before the World Cup, the Canadian federation announced this Monday (25).
Davies suffered a muscle injury to his thigh during the UEFA Champions League semi-final and has had a season marked by physical problems.
The group will train throughout the week in Charlotte, North Carolina, before the official announcement of the final list for the World Cup, scheduled for Friday (29) at 8pm (Brasília time).
"These are the final days before we announce the squad that will represent Canada at a home World Cup, and the excitement in this group is real," said coach Jesse Marsch in an official statement.
"We feel the excitement building across the country and we are calm, focused and prepared for this moment."
Davies' physical problems have been piling up this season. In March, he had already been absent from the team in friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia due to a muscle injury.
The most recent problem occurred almost three weeks ago, in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Canadian federation reported that players will gradually report to training in alignment with clubs and medical departments, prioritizing the athletes' physical condition.
Canada in the World Cup
After the preparation period, Canada will head to Edmonton, where they will face Uzbekistan in a friendly on June 1st. Then, they face Ireland in Montreal, on the 5th, before their World Cup debut.
The Canadian team opens its World Cup campaign on June 12, against Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Toronto. Afterwards, they will face Qatar, in Vancouver, on the 18th, and Switzerland, also in Vancouver, on the 24th.
