Almost half a million Russian soldiers have already died in Ukraine

Almost 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the war in Ukraine, the director of the United Kingdom's intelligence and security agency (GCHQ) said on Wednesday (27/05).
"While we remain firm in our support for Ukraine, (President Vladimir) Putin is retreating on the battlefield," said Anne Keast-Butler.
Other estimates have also reported hundreds of thousands of casualties among Russian military personnel, while the Kremlin's confrontation with the neighboring country is already in its fifth year.
In January, a study by the American think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated the number of dead, injured or missing on the Russian side at 1.2 million.
Of the total, 325,000 would have died by then, surpassing the military casualties suffered by a great power in any other confrontation since the Second World War. Russia refuted the data.

Forced mobilization on the way?
Other estimates are still maintained by media outlets, based on public records and independent verifications. According to calculations by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), casualties on the front would exceed 30,000 soldiers per month.
According to official data, around 300,000 men were called up at the time. It is estimated that Russia currently has around 700,000 soldiers in the war zone.
But, given the accumulation of casualties and the slow pace of voluntary enlistment, observers have been speculating for weeks that Putin could, as he already did in 2022, announce a new forced mobilization.
At the moment, neither side is registering major territorial advances, and Ukraine has intensified attacks against oil transport infrastructure facilities inside Russia.
