Almost 3 thousand Brazilians will be stopped at EU borders in 2025

Almost three thousand Brazilians were denied entry into the European Union (EU) in 2025, according to official data from the bloc. In total, 2,910 were blocked. Of these, 2,690 were stopped from landing at European bloc airports. Another 180 were refused entry at land borders, and 40 at sea borders.
The total number is 14% higher than the number of barred Brazilians registered in 2024. It is also the highest number since 2019, when 6,435 barred Brazilians were recorded.
For 2025, Brazil is in 12th place in the ranking of countries with the most citizens blocked at borders, whether air, land or sea. Just over half of the refusals occurred in Portugal (750) and Ireland (725), countries that bring together large Brazilian communities.
In the Portuguese case, Brazilians were the most blocked nationality. In the Irish, they were second, behind the Albanians. The data are from the European Union Statistics Office (Eurostat).
Among the reasons listed by the EU for blocking foreigners at airports are visa problems, inability to prove minimum resources for stay, use of irregular or false documentation and presence on alert lists about potential criminal or terrorist threats.
More than a third of Brazilians rejected (1,085) in 2025 had the purpose or conditions of their stay in the EU considered unjustified by the immigration authorities. Another 645 were blocked for carrying fake residence permits or visas.

Across the world EU, border rejections increased by 7.1% in 2025 compared to the previous year. There were 132,600 people barred last year.
In 2025, the majority (53.9%) of third-country nationals refused entry to the EU were at external land borders, followed by air borders (43.1%), while only a small proportion (3.0%) were at sea borders.
The highest numbers of rejections at external land borders were recorded in Poland (26.3 thousand), Croatia (11.6 thousand) and Romania (9.2 thousand).
The most barred nationality in the bloc was Ukrainian, with 130,000 citizens of the country barred in 2025. Ukraine faces the fifth year of war against Russia.
At air borders, France recorded the highest number of refusals (10,000), followed by Spain (9,900) and Germany (7,400). Italy had the highest number of refusals at the EU's maritime borders (1.4 thousand), followed by France (1 thousand) and Greece (405).

The biggest growth in 2025 in the bloc, however, was in the detection of undocumented people in the territory of member countries (21.7%), followed by the execution of deportation orders (20.9%).
Germany had the highest participation in the detection of undocumented people, equivalent to 23.4% of cases across the EU. Next come France (22.2%), Italy (11.5%), Greece (8.5%) and Spain (8.2%). The nationalities most affected were Algerians, Afghans, Moroccans and Ukrainians.
The most deported in 2025 were Turks, Georgians, Syrians, Albanians and Russians. In total, 135,400 were deported outside the EU. In turn, Brazilians accounted for 3,050 cases, or 2% of the total.
