Almada, Argentina's World Cup starter, agrees to return to South American football

Argentine striker Thiago Almada will leave Atlético de Madrid to play for River Plate. The information was confirmed by a source from the Argentine club's board of directors to the Reuters agency this Monday (6).

"We have reached an agreement with Atlético and Thiago, but the announcement will be made after the World Cup", said a person linked to River management, after negotiations held in Spain.

At the age of 25, Almada, champion of the 2022 World Cup and currently competing in the World Cup in the United States, decided to return to Argentine football in search of more playing time, something he was unable to achieve consistently during his time in European football, according to a source close to the player.

According to the Argentine press, the transfer will be completed for around US$20 million for 50% of the athlete's economic rights.

Formed by Vélez Sarsfield, Almada played for Atlanta United, Botafogo and Lyon before arriving at Atlético de Madrid. Last season, he played 40 matches across all competitions and scored four goals.
