Alckmin classifies the US department's proposal to tax exports from Brazil as 'unfair'

Vice President Geraldo Alckmin stated this Tuesday (2) that the Brazilian government classifies as "unfair" the proposal by the United States Trade Office (USTR) to apply 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods.
He also stated that Brazil received "with indignation" the result of an investigation that accuses the Brazilian government of adopting practices that "encumber or restrict" trade with the Americans.
Among these practices cited by the US department are PIX, illegal deforestation, piracy and failures in the application of anti-corruption laws.
"Brazil receives the proposal with indignation and is unfair, it understands that it is unfair", said Alckmin.
Alckmin gave the statements after a meeting with ministers Dario Durigan (Finance) and Márcio Elias Rosa (Development, Industry, Commerce and Services) in which the USTR's conclusions were debated.

The vice-president countered criticism of the PIX, highlighting that the system is a technological achievement that boosts the economy at no cost to citizens.
"The PIX is a national heritage, an achievement of the Brazilian people. It is technology to service to society and the economy, ensuring agility at no cost to the population", stated the vice-president.
Regarding the relationship with the technology sector, the minister highlighted that the government keeps its doors open. "Brazil is open to big techs. National and foreign companies receive the same treatment in the country", he pointed out.
Trade imbalance and tariffs
Alckmin highlighted that the trade balance between the two countries is largely in favor of the Americans. According to him, the US records a surplus of US$40 billion in its relationship with Brazil.
The vice-president cited examples of imbalance in the commodities sector, such as ethanol and sugar.
"Of the ten products that Brazil imports most from the US, eight come here with zero tariffs. We understand that this proposal [for taxation] is completely unreasonable", he argued.
Environment and corruption
The minister also presented data on the reduction of deforestation to reinforce the commitment government environment. He highlighted that the Amazon registered a drop of more than 50% in indices.
Alckmin recalled that the country approved recent devices to strengthen the fight against corruption and respects intellectual property standards - an area where, according to him, the USA is the biggest beneficiary.
Dialogue and criticism of 'saboteurs'
Despite the indignation with the proposal, the vice-president stated that the way to prevent recommendations from becoming real sanctions is diplomacy.
"The path is the dialogue that is already taking place. There is no prohibited topic", said Alckmin, who also took the opportunity to criticize internal opponents", declared Alckmin.
False patriots and saboteurs put personal and electoral interests above the country. Let's work and dialogue so that these measures do not materialize."
