Airfare soars and domestic flights now cost, on average, more than R$630 in Brazil

Airfare can rise by up to 20% with kerosene, experts say
Traveling by plane is becoming increasingly expensive. The average price of domestic tickets reached R$632.53 in May this year, an increase of 11.2% compared to May 2025 (R$568.96) and 7.3% compared to the same period in 2024 (R$589.34).
The data are from the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), which monitors air fares monthly. The values only consider the price of air transport, without including airport taxes or other charges, and are updated according to inflation.

According to Anac, in May, 49.1% of domestic airline tickets (flights within Brazil) were sold for less than R$500. Of this total, 20.7% of tickets cost up to R$300, while 28.4% were in the range between R$300 and R$500.
On the other hand, 5.4% of tickets sold to the general public were above R$ 1,500 - that is, approximately 1 in every 20 tickets exceeded this value, which is close to the 2026 minimum wage, of R$ 1,621.

One of the factors that put pressure on fares was the increase in the price of aviation fuel (QAV).
The oil market has been impacted by geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, in addition to instability in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main oil transport routes, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil passes.
The location accounts for a significant portion of the global flow of the commodity, and any interruption could increase international prices.
In May, the average value of a liter of QAV reached R$6.46, an increase of 68.5% compared to the same period in 2025 and 44.4% compared to May 2024, according to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).
More than 8 million people traveled through Brazil
Anac's demand and supply report shows that the number of passengers in May this year reached 8.3 million.
In total, the airline market grew 2.5% when compared to the same period last year, but the advance was concentrated in two large companies: Latam and Gol increased their volume and together dominate 72% of the sector, while Azul lost strength and saw its share fall.
