After scare, Argentina tries to avoid new suffering against African team

Argentina struggled, but defeated Cape Verde 3-2 and secured a place in the round of 16 of the World Cup. After the hard-fought victory, achieved in extra time, the South American team will have another African opponent ahead of them this Tuesday (7). This time, the challenge will be against Egypt.

The retrospect is favorable to the current world champions. The teams have faced each other twice in history, and Argentina won both.

The first meeting was in the semi-final of the 1928 Olympic Games, when the Argentines won 6-0. The most recent duel took place in a friendly played in 2008, with Argentina winning again, this time 2-0.

The advantage in the history of confrontations, however, does not guarantee an easy life. Owner of seven African Cup of Nations titles, Egypt surprised by advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in its history, after eliminating Australia.

The clash will also put Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah face to face, two of the biggest names in world football in recent decades. While the Argentine tries to keep his world title defense alive, the Egyptian seeks to lead his team to an unprecedented qualification to the quarter-finals.
