The United States Trade Representative held a virtual meeting with the Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services of Brazil, Márcio Fernando Elias Rosa.
The meeting aimed to follow up on the bilateral meeting that took place on May 7 between the North American president, Donald Trump, and the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, at the White House.
On social media, the US trade authority celebrated the "constructive engagement" of the Brazilian government to move forward on trade issues and stated that it looks forward to the continuation of discussions between the two countries.

Relationship between Brazil and the USA
Lula stated that the meeting with Trump focused on resuming and strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The president said he wants the United States to see Brazil as an important partner.
Also according to the Brazilian president, there is mutual interest in expanding the partnership, especially in the economic and commercial areas. He stated that the US had paid less attention to Latin America in recent years, which resulted in China's advance in the region.
Lula said that he defended a relationship based on dialogue and multilateralism, as opposed to unilateral policies.
According to him, Brazil is open to negotiating with different partners without restrictions, as long as sovereignty and national interests are respected.
Lula also stated that he proposed the creation of a bilateral working group to deal with trade impasses involving import tariffs. According to him, a proposal must be presented within 30 days.
The president declared that he left the meeting optimistic and assessed that there is room for progress. According to Lula, Trump demonstrated a willingness to maintain dialogue, and new meetings should take place.
"I left the meeting very satisfied. I think it was an important meeting for Brazil and important for the United States."

Lula stated that he discussed with Trump the Brazilian potential in the exploration of rare earths and critical minerals, considered strategic for the global economy.
According to Lula, Brazil intends to expand knowledge about its own territory and advance in the exploration of these resources in a planned manner.
The president said that the country does not want to repeat the historical model of exporting raw materials without adding value.
According to him, the proposal is to develop the production chain in Brazil, including processing and industrialization stages.
Lula stated that the country is open to international partnerships, including with American companies, but without preference for a specific country. The objective is to attract investments that contribute to internal development.
The president declared that the issue was treated as a matter of national sovereignty. He stated that the government created coordination mechanisms to organize the agenda and guarantee control over resources.
"Brazil will be open to building partnerships. What we don't want is to be mere exporters of these things," he said. "We want Brazil to be the great creator of this wealth that nature has given us."

Lula stated that he discussed international conflicts with Trump and presented Brazil's view on ongoing wars. He also said that he defended dialogue as an alternative to military interventions.
The Brazilian president indicated that he does not expect immediate changes in Trump's stance on conflicts.
Still, he said he considered it important to directly present Brazilian positions during the meeting.
He also mentioned specific situations, such as Iran and Venezuela, and stated that he made Brazil available to contribute to negotiations, if there is interest.
Lula also stated that he does not intend to clash with the American president because of differences over global conflicts. He said he was "totally against wars" and declared that he is critical of the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
On Cuba, Lula stated that Trump. he said he had no intention of invading the island, as Havana has shown openness to dialogue. The Brazilian president classified the statement as a positive sign.
"Trump is not going to change his way of being because of a three-hour meeting with me," he said. There is no victim, there is no destruction of a home, there is no death of a child."

Lula stated that he defended, in the conversation with Trump, the need to reform the UN Security Council. According to him, the current structure reflects the geopolitics of the post-Second World War and no longer corresponds to international reality.
Lula said that he has demanded greater protagonism from the powers with permanent seats in the body - such as the United States, China and Russia - to lead the process of change.
According to the president, these countries have direct responsibility for the functioning of the international system.
According to the president, the lack of reforms limits the UN's ability to act in conflicts and crises. He stated that, without changes, the organization loses relevance and has difficulty responding to current challenges.
He once again defended the expansion of the Security Council, with the inclusion of new permanent members. Lula cited Brazil, Japan, India and African countries as candidates to participate in global decisions.
"The geopolitics of 2026 is not the geopolitics of 1945. The world is different, communication is different."

The Brazilian president stated that he took advantage of the meeting to joke with Trump.

"I said: I hope you don't cancel the visas of the Brazilian players, because we are going to come here to win the World Cup. And he laughed, because now he will always laugh."
Lula also commented on the atmosphere of the meeting and said that moments of relaxation help in dialogue between leaders. According to him, the image of the meeting also has political weight and he stated that seeing Trump smiling is better than seeing him "with an ugly face".
The president also said that he made a point of creating a lighter atmosphere during the conversation and assessed that the good mood helped to make the meeting more peaceful.
What was not discussed

Lula stated that some topics raised before the meeting did not enter the agenda of the meeting with Trump. Among them, the possible classification of Brazilian criminal factions as terrorist organizations and the PIX.
According to the president, although the issue of criminal factions has not been addressed directly, Brazil made it clear that it intends to intensify the fight against organized crime and mentioned international cooperation initiatives in the area.
Lula also stated that he told Trump that Brazil is willing to help in the creation of an international working group to combat organized crime, bringing together countries from South America, Latin America and, eventually, other regions of the world.
Regarding the PIX, the president stated that he took the Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, to the meeting, with the expectation of discussing the issue.
Currently, the USA is conducting an investigation against Brazil for alleged irregularities in commercial practices. The PIX is among the items analyzed.
According to the US government, the Brazilian system is seen as a threat to US companies, as it creates disadvantages for services such as credit cards.
According to Lula, as Trump did not mention the subject during the meeting, he also decided not to address it.
"I hope that one day he will create a PIX, because many American companies already do it", he said.
