Adoption Day: More than 80 thousand children returned to biological families

Since 2020, a total of 80,103 children and adolescents who lived in foster care institutions in Brazil have returned to their biological families. The data, extracted from the National Adoption and Reception System (SNA), this Monday (25th), National Adoption Day, are prepared by the National Council of Justice (CNJ).

The numbers indicate that returning to live with parents or close relatives after resolving the original conflicts is the most frequent outcome for minors assisted by the Brazilian State.

Priority for the biological bond
The volume of family reintegrations is significantly higher than that of completed adoptions. While more than 80,000 minors have returned to their homes since 2020, the number of children and adolescents adopted since 2019 totals 33,559.

Currently, Brazil has 36,428 minors sheltered in shelters, homes or foster family programs.

These minors are removed from their original families as a protection measure, but this does not mean that they are available for adoption.

The removal of family power only occurs when the possibilities of maintaining the bond with the biological family have been exhausted.

Today, only 6,247 children are legally ready to be adopted in the country.

The role of reception and justice
The protection system works to ensure that the period of institutional reception is temporary. The return occurs when the Children and Youth Court verifies that the problems that caused the reception have been resolved.

For cases in which return is not possible, the system searches for qualified applicants, who currently have 32,065 active people in the queue.

While states like São Paulo concentrate the largest volume of applicants, most of the North and Central-West regions have a lower density of qualified families.

In addition, adopters' preference for specific profiles makes it difficult for older children or those with siblings to leave.
