Actors and scripts created by AI will not be able to compete for Oscars

Actors and scripts created by artificial intelligence will not be able to compete for the Oscar. The new rule was published last Friday (1st) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, organizer of the award.

The objective is to make it clear that the acting and script must be carried out by human beings to be eligible. The changes apply to registrations for the next Oscar ceremony, scheduled for March 2027.

The rules state that the Academy may request additional information to verify whether submitted scripts were written by humans.

Last year, the debut of an AI-generated actress called Tilly Norwood provoked a negative reaction from the actors' union, mainly due to the show of interest from studio executives.

Under new Academy rules, filmmakers can use AI tools, but a "synthetic" actor like Norwood would not be eligible for an Oscar.
