Academia no longer differentiates between online and offline, says psychologist

The growing immersion in the digital environment is erasing the boundaries between the online and offline world, according to Andréa Jotta, researcher in Cyberpsychology at PUC in São Paulo. In an interview with WW Especial, she warned about the harmful effects that the increasing amount of time exposed to digital technology has on health and interpersonal relationships.

According to the researcher, in academia there is no longer a distinction made between the online and offline environments. "What we see is that on will increasingly be the background in our lives," he said. The psychologist projected that in approximately five years, connectivity will no longer be restricted to smartphones and will begin to be present in practically all everyday objects - televisions, radios, household appliances - in the context of the so-called internet of things.

Andréa Jotta highlighted that this process has already intensified since the pandemic, with people becoming less and less disconnected. "Connections are becoming increasingly easier, and not only directly connected to the smartphone, but to any device", he noted. For her, the tendency is for the state of permanent connection to make digital disconnection an increasingly difficult and conscious choice.

Given this scenario, the researcher expressed the hope that human beings will be able to deal with hyperconnectivity in a balanced way. "The tendency we have in the gym is for human beings to be able to deal with this in a healthy way and to take their own time off", stated Andréa Jotta. For her, it is essential to value what is human and teach people to recognize that both the online and offline states have their value. "The off has to be as attractive as the on", he concluded.
