A study shows that 20% of industries have had cargo stolen or stolen in the last five years; 68% of cases were on highways

A survey by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) shows that 20% of Brazilian industries reported that they had cargo stolen or stolen in the last five years.
Of these, 68% of incidents occurred on highways across the country, while 48% were in urban areas and 21% in warehouses and cargo terminals. Among the companies affected, 42% recorded losses of up to R$50,000.
In addition, 16% of industries stated that they had been victims of theft, robbery or acts of vandalism in facilities or factories in the same period.
Among the main targets were:
wires, cables and metals (60%);
followed by tools (31%); and
machinery and production equipment (23%).

In these cases, 70% of companies reported losses of up to R$50,000 in the last year. The survey, commissioned by the CNI, interviewed 500 small and 503 medium and large industries across the country, between March 12 and April 7, 2026.
The data was presented this Tuesday (9), during a public hearing of the Mixed Parliamentary Front in Defense of Intellectual Property and Combating Piracy, which discussed public security and integrated strategies to combat illegalities.
Another topic covered in the survey was digital security. According to reports, in the last five years, 17% of companies have been the target of incidents involving sensitive data, such as information leaks or data hijacking.
Among the industries that suffered this type of attack, 30% had direct financial losses in the last year, 23% had to interrupt operations and 17% recorded leaks of customer and employee data.

Costs are passed on
According to businesspeople, the costs of insecurity also reach the consumer. For 62% of industries, the cost of transportation security causes some level of increase in the final costs of products.
In 45% of companies, general investments in security also make goods significantly or moderately more expensive.
"Brazil's property security is an additional cost for Brazilian production, which alters Brazil's competitiveness", said federal deputy Julio Lopes, president of the parliamentary front.
CNI presidential advisor, Cássio Borges, says that the data "are very worrying because information security is crucial for business".
"This type of crime brings different losses, such as financial losses, operational disruptions, damage to reputation, legal responsibilities, physical damage or even risks to national security," he said.
Illegal market
The CNI survey also identified that 53% of industry entrepreneurs believe that insecurity contributes significantly to the strengthening of the illegal market and the increase in the circulation of stolen goods.
Among the companies interviewed, 54% believe that increasing policing in industrial areas should be a priority. Another 43% defend the improvement of legislation on the subject.
