7x1 defeat, Tite's departure and relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo: Felipão talks about football trajectory issues
'Pode Ask?': Felipão says that a player's worst enemy is vanity
In participation in Fantástico's "Pode Ask?" section, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, known as Felipão, spoke about important topics in his career in football: the Brazilian team's historic 7-1 defeat to Germany in 2014, the departure of coach Tite and his close relationship with Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo. See the video above.
Historic defeat in 2018
The coach classified the result at Mineirão as a collective episode and highlighted the difficulty of reacting during the match. According to him, already at half-time, with the score at 5-0, there was no room for deep tactical adjustments, but rather to try to contain the emotional impact on the players.
"Reassessment when it's 5-0 is difficult. What was up to me was not to leave a final devastation. To show that the world didn't end there", he stated.
Felipão also highlighted that the defeat must be shared by the entire group.
"We won as a group, we lost as a group. I was just one more at that moment", he said.
The coach also compared the episode with later achievements in his career, such as his time in Chinese football, where he accumulated titles. For him, overcoming is a fundamental part of his career in sport. "We can't sink because a problem exists", he added.
Relationship with Tite remains distant
Another point discussed was coach Tite's distancing. Felipão confirmed that the two were separated after an accusation involving an alleged intentional defeat in a game in the past - a situation that he categorically denies.
"There was no truth whatsoever. It was a completely wrong statement", he stated.
The coach explained that, despite attempts at rapprochement, contact has not yet been resumed.
"We thought it was not the time. We are still a little apart", he said. He, however, minimized the conflict and expressed expectation of reconciliation in the future. "I think that, over time, we will forget this. It's nonsense that football will have to eliminate", he assessed.
Friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo
Felipão also surprised by commenting on his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he worked on the Portugal national team. According to him, he maintains frequent contact with the attacker to this day.
"I have his number, we communicate. It's a relationship like a father to a son", he said.
The coach praised not only the talent, but also the player's dedication.
"Everything you hear about Cristiano is true. He's spectacular. He doesn't settle for what's normal - until he learns the most difficult things, he doesn't stop," he said.
Felipão also highlighted the athlete's longevity, who continues to perform at a high level. "That's why he continues to this day, over 40 years old, playing professionally", he concluded.
At 77 years old, Felipão continues to be one of the most emblematic figures in Brazilian football, marked by both the 2002 world title and the 2014 defeat - two extremes that, according to him, help define his trajectory.
