73% of active cars in SP are over 10 years old
The vast majority of the vehicle fleet that circulates through the state of São Paulo has been active since 2016. According to the most recent data released by Detran-SP, of the 15,523,462 active vehicles in the state, 72.89% (around 11.3 million) are more than a decade old.
The survey raises a warning about the adoption of new cars by São Paulo residents, a possible mismatch between the supply of automakers and the demand in the region, and the possible impacts on road safety and pollutant emissions.
The top and bottom of the automotive age pyramid in São Paulo reveal a profound contrast. While new cars or cars up to 1 year old represent only 3.14% (487,174 units) of the total, vehicles with more than 20 years of use account for 32.8% (5,093,409 units).
In other words, the volume of cars manufactured before 2006 running in SP is almost triple the total number of vehicles manufactured in the last five years in the country (which today represent 12.78% of the state's fleet).
Check below the age of the state's active fleet, separated by age group, according to data from Detran-SP:
- Up to 1 year of age: 487,174 (3.14%)
- Between 1 and 2 years: 440,730 (2.84%)
- Between 2 and 5 years: 1,055,492 (6.8%)
- Between 5 and 10 years: 2,224,846 (14.33%)
- Between 10 and 20 years old: 6,221,811 (40.08%)
- Over 20 years old: 5,093,409 (32.81%)
The non-adherence to brand new cars becomes an isolated concern for the automobile segment when data from the fleet of motorcycles and scooters is included, which presents more uniform percentages over time.
More than 8% of the active motorcycle fleet is less than 1 year old, while only 16.9% is over 20 years old. And, with approximately 13% between 2 and 5 years, and another 13% between 5 and 10 years, it stands out that the supply and demand for motorcycles in SP are on the same page, while the disparity in the automotive sector is starting to cause some discomfort.
