5.5 magnitude earthquake hits border between Peru and Ecuador

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 hit the border region between Peru and Ecuador in the early hours of Saturday (13), according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

The tremor was recorded at 3:35 am Brasília time (6:35 am UTC). The epicenter was near the Peruvian city of Ayabaca, about 10 kilometers west of Suyo, in the Piura region, and approximately 86 kilometers southwest of Loja, in Ecuador.
➡ An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 is considered to be of moderate intensity. In this range, the tremor can be felt by a large number of people in areas close to the epicenter and cause light to moderate damage to more vulnerable buildings, but it does not normally cause large-scale destruction.
The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) estimated maximum intensity between IV and V on the Modified Mercalli scale, a level at which the tremor is usually perceived by the population and can cause minor damage to more fragile structures.
