4.1 magnitude earthquake hits southern Portugal

An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 hit the Algarve region, in the south of Portugal, this Sunday morning (28), but left no injuries or caused material damage, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The tremor occurred at 7:59 am (local time) and was felt in the cities of Lagos and Portimão. According to IPMA, based on the information available to date, there have been no records of victims or losses.
The epicenter was located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 70 kilometers from Cabo de São Vicente.

The south of Portugal and the Azores archipelago are in a zone of seismic activity that marks the border between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, although the region has recorded little activity in recent years years.
Portugal has a history of large earthquakes. In 1755, Lisbon was devastated by a strong earthquake followed by a tsunami, one of the deadliest natural disasters in European history, which left between 30,000 and 40,000 people dead.
More recently, in 1969, an earthquake of magnitude 7.9, also with an epicenter near Cabo de São Vicente, killed at least 13 people and left dozens injured.
