The story of 'My wife won't let me go', the 'review' that became a hit song in 2010
At the end of 2010, Reginaldo Alves da Silva proved that, to make a hit, you don't need much: all you need is a keyboard and a very jealous wife.
By transforming the classic excuse "I won't go... My wife won't let me go" into music, the artist gave life to a bubblegum chorus that dominated the country entire.
This article is part of the series "20 hits in 20 years", which is on GloboPop, Globo's new vertical short video application, available for free on your cell phone. On the app, you can follow the "20 hits in 20 years" stage so you don't miss any episode. Download GloboPop here.
The story of this song begins, as always, at a bar table. And the plot is all based on real pain.
Reginho, who had already been on the road in music for years, used to say that, among his friends, he had the reputation of being "his wife's boss". He then decided to transform "fate" into a letter.
Reginho, owner of the brega 'Minha Mulher Não Deixa Não', a hit from 2010.
Disclosure
Unlike productions at the time, however, the brega was not released through a major record label, but rather through an amateur video posted on YouTube.
The image was simple: four friends, on the edge of Maria Farinha beach, in Pernambuco, doing a clumsy choreography that quickly became a national craze.
In a short time, "Vou não, quer não" was already on the lips of football players and was being covered by artists of all genres, from country music to axé.
The success was so great that the group Reginho and Banda Surpresa performed more than 50 shows per month at the time, and was played by almost all the auditorium programs in the country.
But fate, unpredictable as it is, played a trick on the band's trajectory.
At the height of their success, in 2011, the group suffered a bus accident in Bahia that ended up killing one of the members and leaving Reginho injured.
After that, nothing was the same. The band disbanded, and Roginho never managed to achieve another commercial success of the size of his "cheesy review" about jealousy.
Still, "Minha Mulher Não Deixa Não" was immortalized as one of the great landmarks of this culture "meme that becomes music, music that becomes meme".
The track was proof that a good idea and a bubblegum chorus can turn anyone into a star... even if it's just for a summer.
