10 Times Netflix Tried to Create an Oscar Movie and Completely Failed
In recent years, Netflix has invested billions of dollars in an attempt to gain prestige with the Hollywood Academy. Although it had important successes, several projects produced with clear Oscar ambitions ended up falling far below expectations.
Far Out Magazine gathered ten examples of productions often cited as failed attempts to create so-called "Oscar bait" - films designed specifically to attract attention during awards season.
Among the highlighted titles are:
1. **Hillbilly Elegy (2020)**
2. **The Prom (2020)**
3. **Blonde (2022)**
4. **Don't Look Up (2021)**
5. **White Noise (2022)**
6. **The Good Nurse (2022)**
7. **Maestro (2023)**
8. **Nyad (2023)**
9. **The Laundromat (2019)**
10. **Mank (2020)**
According to the publication, these films arrived surrounded by high expectations due to their star casts, renowned directors or aggressive marketing campaigns.
However, many of them received divided reviews from critics, faced rejection from the public or did not achieve the expected results at the main awards shows.
The phenomenon shows how success at awards shows remains difficult to predict, even for companies that invest huge amounts in prestigious productions.
Despite the aforementioned failures, Netflix remains one of the main forces in Hollywood and continues to compete directly with the large traditional studios in the Oscar race.
