The horror "Backrooms: A No Place" hits theaters this Thursday (28), with the aim of transporting viewers to a dimension beyond reality. The trailer has already accumulated more than 30 million views, but the roots of this story emerged through a simple image published on the internet.

In 2019, an anonymous post on the online forum 4chan, which shows an empty space with a yellow carpet covering the floor and walls, went viral online and spread to other platforms, such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).

The Backrooms started as a throwaway 4chan image post, and one reply to it set in motion a whole genre of creepy liminal content and a now a feature film. Compelling ideas take on a life of their own, and on the internet we can trace them back to their source. Very cool. pic.twitter.com/7WkseEXDGK

From that publication, the concept of "Backrooms", a parallel dimension like empty rooms and corridors that stretch for kilometers, grew collectively and turned into a creepypasta - urban horror legends shared on the internet.

In January 2022, three years later, 16-year-old British boy Kane Parsons published a 9-minute and 14-second short film on YouTube made using free 3D animation software.

The content, which adds other supernatural elements to Backrooms, went viral so much that Parsons was called by production company A24 to be the film's director.

It was his video that transformed the legend of the Backrooms into a cohesive story, with characters, atmosphere and mythology of its own, introducing the "Async Research Institute", a fictional organization that studies and documents these dimensions to the universe.

Today, Kane Parsons' original video has gained more than 20 sequences on the young man's channel, with the last production published in February 2025.
