President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Wednesday (10) that the government is developing a program that is capable of sending messages to stolen cell phones and then returning them through post offices instead of police stations. The announcement was made during the 7th Plenary Meeting of the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development, in Brasília.

According to Lula, the project was called Telephone Seguro. Through it, people who have stolen cell phones will receive a message to return the device. The president is still studying, however, the possibility of returns being made directly at post offices.

"I don't want to return it to the police station, I want to return it to the Post Office, because returning it to the police station people are even afraid because they don't know the type of police officer they will meet, or the type of police officer. So let's try to get us to go to the Post Office", explained Lula.

"We have the registration, address and chassis of 2.5 million stolen cell phones. We don't know who stole them, but we know that the phones were stolen," said Lula. "I was going to press a little button and send a message saying that all two and a half million people who have their cell phone stolen have to return it. They need to return it because he could be committing a crime and, if he is caught, he could suffer unnecessary punishment."
